Rodrigo Prieto se ha convertido en el director de fotografía favorito de Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas), ya que ha participado en tres de los proyectos más recientes del director: El lobo de Wall Street, Silencio y El irlandés; justo por esta última cinta y la mancuerna entre estos dos grandes del cine es que el cinefotógrafo mexicano obtiene su primera nominación a los Critics’ Choice Awards que regularmente es un buen indicador de quiénes podrían estar nominados al Oscar.
Cabe destacar que el año pasado un mexicano se llevó la categoría de Mejor cinematografía en estos premios, ya que Alfonso Cuarón con su trabajo en diversos departamentos de su cinta Roma fue reconocido con este galardón. Esta es la sexta ocasión en que un mexicano es nominado a la categoría de las 11 ediciones totales en que se ha entregado este premio y en todas las anteriores (cuatro para Emmanuel Lubezki y una para Cuarón) han triunfado, así que Rodrigo puede seguir con la racha.
Por otro lado, en la lista completa de nominados a los Critics’ Choice Awards, El irlandés es la cinta que más nominaciones tiene con 14 en total, seguido de Había una vez… en Hollywood de Quentin Tarantino con 12.
